Getting there
Getting to Cais de Gaia on foot
How to reach the fado venue on the Gaia riverfront: across the bridge's lower deck from the Porto quayside, or by cable car down from the upper town.
Choose your night on the Cais ↗Quick answer
Walk. From the Ribeira on the Porto bank, cross the lower deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge, which is open to pedestrians and links the Ribeira with the Gaia waterfront and its port lodges. You arrive on Avenida de Diogo Leite, the road along the Cais de Gaia where the venue stands. From the upper town, the metro crosses the bridge's upper deck to Jardim do Morro, beside the top of the Gaia cable car.
Where you are heading
The concert takes place on Avenida de Diogo Leite, the road that runs along the Cais de Gaia, the Gaia riverfront among the port wine cellars that face Porto across the Douro. The venue sits near the World of Wine (WOW) cultural district, and tickets are checked at the riverside club building opposite the tourist information point. Vila Nova de Gaia is a separate city from Porto, on the south bank, but the two old centres face each other across the water and feel like one place on foot.
The lower deck from the Ribeira
Two decks hang from the single iron arch of the Dom Luís I Bridge. The lower deck carries road traffic and pedestrians, while the metro and more walkers cross on the top deck. On the Porto side it starts by the Cais da Ribeira and the Praça da Ribeira; on the Gaia side it meets Avenida Diogo Leite, the riverside road. Walk across, turn along the quay and look for the venue among the cellar fronts. The crossing gives you a fine view of both banks before the music.
From the upper town
If you are staying near the cathedral or São Bento station, use the upper deck instead. Wikipedia notes that the upper level carries pedestrians and the Porto Metro across to the Gaia side, where the cable car's upper station stands by Jardim do Morro, a short climb below the Serra do Pilar monastery. The cable car's lower station is on the riverside promenade of the Cais de Gaia, so you can ride down to the quay.
Before the concert
The Cais de Gaia is lined with the cellars, locally called caves, where port is stored and aged, and Wikipedia notes that they have become a major tourist attraction in their own right. Rabelo boats, the flat-bottomed wooden cargo boats that for centuries carried port wine barrels down the Douro, are no longer in commercial use, but Wikipedia notes that many, owned by port wine companies, can still be seen on the river at Porto and Gaia. An hour in a lodge, or simply a walk along the water, makes a good warm-up for the music.
Mobility and timing
The concert venue is not suitable for wheelchair users, so plan accordingly if anyone in your party uses one. Whatever route you take, allow time to find the riverside club building where tickets are shown, because the quay is busy in the evening. Check the start for your night on the confirmation before you set out.
